Joe Jacomet grew up in the Piqua-Troy area of west-central Ohio and attended Miami East, a small high school. “It was a rural area,” he explained, “but we had a great teacher, Mr. Tom Bryant, who taught all of the advanced science courses.” At the time, going to college was not the norm for many young people in that area and Joe’s plans “…were simply to graduate and find a job, probably at Hobart Manufacturing.” However, Mr. Bryant had other plans and suggested to Joe that he go to college because, amongst other things, “I was doing well in science and math.” Fortunately, Miami (Ohio) University had an applied science Paper Technology program focused on chemistry and chemical engineering that suited Jacomet, who went there on a four-year scholarship to begin his higher education. “The focus on paper really opened the door to a lot of related technologies but particularly polymers in the form of adhesives and coatings.”

Two weeks after opening its production facility at the National Composite Center (NCC) in July 2009, NanoSperse was shipping product to its customers. “Speed to market is a hallmark of NanoSperse’s success,” said NanoSperse President and CEO, Art Fritts. Fritts said there’s a tremendous interest from numerous business sectors in using nanocomposites in new or existing products. NanoSperse’s focus is to offer these companies the ability to design and develop new materials specific to their needs; then transition them quickly to market.

In the majority of cases, Lean Six Sigma strategy consultants can complete strategic projects quicker and cheaper than a company’s internal resources, which are usually too busy working on tactical or day-to-day activities to realize long-term improvement critical to their customers or gaining new market share. As companies succeed in reducing waste, they reduce variation and generally improve their processes.

At a recent Emerging Technology Forum, two representatives from The Andersons, Inc. issued a simple, but highly demanding challenge: We need to feed the world, and we need to create fuel and fiber and raw materials on shrinking arable land (thanks to urban sprawl). This next statement put the challenge in perspective: Because the agriculture industry relies on crop protection and nutrient supplementation as vital to food production, an unfortunate problem results because the liquid formulations of fertilizers and pesticides used in today’s agriculture have the associated risks.
