Ohio’s Third Frontier (TFP) has had another outstanding year in its support of technology-based economic development for the state. Currently averaging nine new dollars brought into Ohio for every dollar spent on the program, the 2008 tally of funds attracted to Ohio reached $3.5 billion. The feat triples the original projected leverage capacity that the TFP targeted. As part of this very encouraging success story, more than 500 companies either were created, were attracted to Ohio, or were capitalized through TFP efforts. Among these companies, the average salary was nearly $68,000.

 In a recent article about the upcoming National Plastics Expo (NPE) conference, Joseph Pryweller, a Plastics News staffer quoted Henry David Thoreau, who said: "Men have become the tools of their tools.” Pryweller followed with his own comment: “But visitors to NPE already know that, since their businesses frequently are only as healthy as their tools."

For a welcome change, here is some good economic news: Ohio has won its third consecutive Governor’s Cup – one of the hallmark awards given to states for their outstanding business and economic development achievements. The Governor’s Cup honors the state with the best record in capital investment – which, again, is Ohio.

Ohio has amazing assets for attracting companies, especially polymer companies that are ready to establish or expand their business to Ohio. A lot of emerging technologies play leapfrog with their commercialization process. A good idea – an advanced material or process – goes to bench testing, then scale-up. Tests prove that it does what it claims. That’s a big leap forward. Then everything slows down, while the manufacturing process gathers itself and advances enough to leap forward and provide the platform for production of marketable quantities.
